I am beginning my 14th year as Director of Bands at Tomball Junior High School. After spending 25 years as a high school band director, I have chosen to focus my teaching at the beginner/junior high level. I have a Bachelors of Music Education degree from Abilene Christian University, and attended graduate classes at Texas A & M - Commerce. Saxophone is my major instrument and I enjoy playing it often and I am currently learning to play the hammered dulcimer.
On a personal note, I have two children, Shaun and Adam. Shaun has a PHD in 20th Century American Literature and lives in Knoxville Tennessee and is a college professor. Adam is an attorney in oil and gas and lives in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. My wife and I have 4 grandchildren who are the loves of our lives. I grew up south of Nashville Tennessee and love the Great Smoky Mountains in east Tennessee.
As Head Band Director at Tomball Junior High School, I am responsible for the overall band program consisting of 2 bands. I have one assistant, Mrs. Cathy Breeden. Together we all teach at TJHS as well as sixth grade band students at Tomball Intermediate School.
The Tomball Junior High Band Program
Among the finest secondary fine arts programs in the state, the Tomball Junior High Band cluster is comprised of over 200 students in grades 6-8 at Tomball Junior HS and its feeder, Tomball Intermediate. Members begin their band experience in the 6th grade where they are divided into like-instrument classes. The TIS band willperform two or three concerts each year.
Seventh and eighth grade members participate in one of two performing bands at Tomball Junior HS. Each band performs in several concerts throughout the year and participates in UIL competition and at least one other major contest or festival. In addition to their regular class-time band rehearsals each week, all band members attend a weekly sectional rehearsal held outside of the school day.
